PENANG’S SURGING CAPTIVE AUDIENCE SEEMS TO NOW INCLUDE THE COMPETITIVE SINGAPOREANS

We have always known the Singaporeans to be a ‘kiasu’ lot …… literally meaning ‘scared to die’ or scared to lose out on virtually anything.

This may be one of the end result of the siege mentality that Lee Kuan Yew created during the time of partition between Malaysia and Singapore in 1965.

Lee Kuan Yew always talks about the intimidation and the Malaysian military on Singapore soil …… resulting in Singapore now having the fire-power to dent any aggression …… even from Indonesia!

Back to my story ……. in today’s age, the siege mentality is more confined to economics ……. like how Singapore can stay ahead of its competitors in the region or even globally.

I recall at one time, much coverage and analysis arose from the building of the Port of Tanjong Pelepas in Johore.

The Singaporean viewed this as a direct threat to its own shipping business that had one of the largest turnovers (in terms of TEU [ton equivalent units]) then …… about 14m per annum!

I recall the Singaporean business papers working overtime on the development of the Malaysian port led by Syed Mokhtar Albukary.

I even recall the PSA (Port of Singapore Authority) having to defer its IPO (Initial Public Offering) around that time although they attributed to market sentiments ……. which I felt that had to do with Syed Mokhtar’s PTP!

Fast forward to today ……. and again I am sensing the same Singaporean ‘concerns’ or shall I call it interests in the recent economic development of Penang.

The Pearl of the Orient had in the past been seen as a direct competitor to Singapore in the early 1970s especially when Penang was under the late Lim Chong Eu.

That ‘threat’ crumbled when the leadership changed to Koh Tsu Koon and his UMNO bretherens and Singapore surged ahead.

That ‘threat’ appears to be returning in the form of the Lim Guan Eng rejuvenated Penang.

Threat enough for the Singapore Business Times to publish the Bloomberg report that was originally entitled, ‘Malaysia Losses from Racial Law Exposed’.

Singapore has always responded to competition by being more proactive and value-added in it processes.

This is in stark contrast to how the current UMNO regime seems to be adopting.

In fact, UMNO’s current media spinners do no justice to the UMNO of the past.

I am of course referring to Ahirudin Attan a.k.a. Rocky.

His outsourced hatchet man, someone called ‘SatD’, runs an expletive laced blog which attempts (in expletive terms) to run down whatever achievements of the Pakatan Rakyat in Penang especially in a totally illogical ranting manner!

The best description of their attempts is pure written diarrhea ……. thank God we don’t have to listen to them, or else it’ll be verbal diarrhea!

Please understand why I am not linking you to their articles as they are bad, bad examples of communication skills!

On the other hand, let me re-produce the article from Bloomberg below that was also published in today’s Singapore Business Times under a more ‘face saving’ heading:-

PEARL OF THE ORIENT SHINES BRIGHTLY

(KUALA LUMPUR) Lim Guan Eng turned Malaysia’s second-smallest state into the nation’s biggest economic success after he bumped into two National Instruments Corp executives at the local airport in 2008.

Elected in March that year as Penang’s first chief minister from an opposition party in 36 years, Mr Lim was struggling with the prospect of federal funding cuts.

He convinced the managers to set up a research and production centre in the state, and within two years the former British trading post was Malaysia’s top destination for foreign manufacturing investment.

With a general election due by early 2013, Penang’s progress highlights the challenges facing the rest of Malaysia and the National Front government as China, Indonesia and Vietnam offer investors bigger workforces while Singapore lures talent with lower taxes and easier immigration.

Mr Lim, 50, the country’s only ethnic-Chinese state leader, embodies the contrast between Penang’s business transparency and the four-decade old policies of the ruling party that favour Malays, which the World Bank says undermine competitiveness.

‘Penang now has a chance to show that if you have good governance, and if you put fairness and justice as your main qualities, free of race considerations, that is actually the way to go for Malaysia,’ said Ooi Kee Beng, Penang-born author and a senior fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore.

In the first seven months of 2011, Penang won RM3.6 billion (S$1.46 billion) of approved foreign manufacturing investment, ahead of the RM3.4 billion that went to Selangor, the state that surrounds the capital Kuala Lumpur, a government report showed last month. The state made up 8.1 per cent of Malaysia’s gross domestic product in 2009, based on constant prices.

Mr Lim has managed to keep Penang attractive for international companies even as Prime Minister Najib focuses federal support on regions such as Johor and Sarawak, where his ruling coalition has among its biggest parliamentary-seat majorities.

To prevent corruption, Penang requires open bidding on contracts of more than RM200,000 and has awarded about RM125 million of jobs through competitive tenders, according to Mr Lim. Transparency International said in a 2009 report that Penang was Malaysia’s first state to implement open tenders for government contracts.

While Mr Lim said his government awards contracts based on merit within the national guidelines, the federal government states that it has no obligation to accept the lowest offer or to give any reason for rejecting a bid.

Under Malaysian federal rules, agencies are only required to invite quotations from at least five bidders for works contracts.

The Malaysian government says it is also pushing for greater transparency, including introducing a whistleblower protection law to fight corruption and a planned competition law next year.

Malaysia’s efforts to woo investments in recent years may have been hampered by its policy of giving preferential treatment to ethnic Malays and some indigenous groups, collectively known as bumiputra, in government jobs, contracts, education and cheaper housing, said Mr Ooi.

When the economy was booming along with its neighbours before the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis, the effects of the policy were less apparent, he said. When growth slowed, the race-based programme became a greater damper, according to Mr Ooi.

While the nation outperformed rivals in the early and mid-1990s, it has struggled to maintain that edge since the regional crisis.

Malaysia’s racial policies spurred a brain drain of largely Chinese and Indian minorities, and limited foreign investment, Philip Schellekens, a senior economist at the World Bank, said in April.

Mr Lim says ethnic Malays also benefit from the state’s economic growth. In the Malaysian state with the highest proportion of ethnic Chinese at 42 per cent, Malay contractors have won most of the jobs awarded by his government through the open tenders, Mr Lim said. The Malay community doesn’t need racial quotas to succeed, he said.

‘We have proven that this is the way forward,’ Mr Lim said in an interview in July. ‘Malaysia has a historical opportunity for change.’ – Bloomberg

TAXPAYERS’ MONEY : USED TO SUSTAIN CLOUDING OF MINDS OF THE RAKYAT?

Was it a real surprise to find out that the Government paid RM94 million of taxpayers’ money to a foreign public relations company to enhance the world’s perception of the country, Malaysia (read: UMNO)?

Was it a real surprise to read about PM Najib recruiting as advisers ….. at a great cost to the taxpayers, I am sure ……. the same strategy team that advised former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, to his first victory in the British General Elections in 1997 under ‘New Labour’?

Was it a real surprise to find that this year’s Budget would mean goodies for everyone …… and I mean everyone, including the taxi drivers …… with where the money is going to come from this being wondered about by the experts!

In Budget jargon, the financing is going to come from estimated future revenue, the source of which is being seriously questioned!

Where exactly does that leave the country in the foreseeable future?

In a bigger hole, I suppose.

With the stakes as high as it is now, fundamentals have been cast aside!

It is the perception war that is being waged between the political adverseries …… with ‘no prisoners being taken alive’ so to speak ….. especially by UMNO’!!

This mode of action has even resulted in unsubstantiated allegations to be made ….. so long as it scores brownie points for UMNO!

When such unsubstantiated allegations occur especially when they involve corporate deals ….. one would usually smell a rat!

Rat ….. because it is usually done to cover up their own misdemeanours.

In one such case, you would suddenly find the UMNO bloggers alleging that DAP (the opposition political party in control of Penang, under the Pakatan Rakyat banner) is involved in the tussle for control over E&O Berhad!

For those not in the know, Sime Darby recently acquired 30% of E&O from the controlling shareholders for RM766 million or RM2.30 per share when its market price trading on Bursa Malaysia then was about RM1.30.

This deal has created a furore because, to put it in a nut-shell, Sime Darby is claiming to have NO CONTROL of E&O despite having paid a substantial premium to become the largest shareholder (30%) of E&O ….. and they purchased the block from the previous controlling shareholders!

This stand enabled Sime Darby to claim exemption from making a similarly attractive offer of RM2.30 each for the remaining shares in E&O held by minority shareholders.

Questions naturally arose as to why these vendors i.e. Terry Tham, Wan Azmi & GK Goh should enjoy such substantial premium prices!

This is when the UMNO bloggers went to work with the alleged DAP conspiracy ….. seemingly to divert our attention from the questions relating to the E&O acquisition price.

These UMNO bloggers are alleging that ECM Libra (a substantial shareholder of E&O), which recently nominated two individuals as directors, are in cahoots with DAP.

So what? What has it got to do with the substantial price paid by Sime Darby for E&O to those individuals … long known for their association with UMNO?

In any case, it is impossible for ECM Libra to have any collaboration with DAP.

Why?

Because, the substantial and largest shareholder of ECM Libra is UMNO croney, Azman Hashim (of Amcorp Group Berhad) ….. meaning that it is effectively an UMNO company!

It’s in ECM Libra’s 2011 Annual Report – check it out on Bursa’s website!

This deal (Azman Hashim surfacing as major shareholder) took place shortly after the ‘demise’ of Pak Lah as Prime Minister.

So, how can DAP be in cahoots with UMNO company, ECM Libra?

Isn’t this wild allegation a red herring …… to divert our attention from something else?

What could it be?

Grapevine has it that the substantial premium paid by Sime Darby i.e. RM330 million out of the RM766 million is for the ‘General Elections’ war chest!

For whose benefit?

Your guess is as good as mine!

LIM GUAN ENG : BESIDES STIFLING DISSENT, IS UMNO ALSO STIFLING COMMENTARY ….. EVEN THE PRIVATE KIND?

To me, it was still quite a spectacle watching the manner in which Lim Guan Eng was hounded by his critics for his alleged disparaging remarks about Johore’s perceived lack of security from criminal elements.

You even get individuals like Rocky aka Ahirudin Attan ‘coughing’ out statistics showing the number of reported crimes in Penang exceeding that of  Johore.

Such is the mentality of some that a reported petty theft in Penang is equivalent to a reported robbery cum murder in Johore!

It was good that Guan Eng offered an apology especially to His Royal Highness, The Sultan of Johore, in order to avoid the ‘elements’ from prolonging and exacerbating the matter.

Even if Guan Eng did utter those remarks, they were done in private …… and yet, there were those rats and cockroaches at every nook and cranny attempting to record what Guan Eng was uttering!

This is certainly confirmation that the paid hatchet media spinners of UMNO are bereft of ideas and stories to raise the profile and legitimacy of UMNO as a leader of the community and the country.

They have been reduced to finding faults with their opponents ….. to the point of whining ……. at events they have not been invited to!

Btw, it is in the grapevine that Penang has this year todate attracted nearly 60% of the Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) that has come into Malaysia.

It may be no wonder the knives were especially sharp for Guan Eng this time round!

But well, that’s Malaysia for you!

As the old saying goes:

A USEFUL TREE THAT BEARS FRUITS WILL CONSTANTLY BE ATTACKED BY PESTS !

NAMEWEE’S THE MAN …… WHILST THE SERPENT’S CAPITULATING!

It’s amazing how the raw anger of a young and talented Malaysian could be directed for the purpose of rallying the masses for the betterment of Malaysia.

I recall Namewee’s first music video that belittled the national anthem of Malaysia whilst taking the mickey out of certain races and religions of the country.

Since then he has re-focused his energy on less controversial projects …… the most notable being his movie, ‘Nasi Lemak 2.0’ and the music video ‘Undilah’, the latter of which had cameo appearances by Tengku Razaleigh, Wee Ka Siong, Tony Fernandes, Lee Chong Wei, Nurul Izzah and other Malaysian celebrities.

They were cool!

Really cool!

But not so to the likes of Rocky aka Ahirudin Attan or Fly-Shit (mole.my)!

Bottom line is that these two UMNO mouth pieces just cannot condone the coming together of all the Malaysian races for the betterment of the country.

A look at their latest sites, especially Rocky’s that was unexpectedly crude, leave a bad taste to any objective visitor to those sites!

Even the YouTube site (highlighted in Rocky’s blog) that was responding to Namewee had been removed by the host due to ‘hate speech’.

Maybe Rocky and his ilk should take a leaf from Namewee and collect and re-direct their anger and hatred for a more useful purpose ……. like encouraging assimilation (for a change!).

Click HERE for the attack on Namewee.

UPDATE (30 Sept 2011) : And now PM Najib is supporting Namewee and describing the rapper as “unique and unconventional in his methods and thinking”. Click HERE

ROCKY IS NOW AT “MOLE.MY” …. A.K.A. “TAHI-LALAT.MY” : A SERPENT’S CONTRAPTION?

It is quite obvious that Rocky aka Ahirudin Attan has been directed by his political master, Najib, to compete with the likes of Malaysiakini, Malaysian Insider and of our dear ol’ Raja Petra …… hence the introduction of “www.mole.my”.

Malaysiakini and the likes are so called ‘anti-establishment’ sites that have strong following …… not so much for their ‘contrarian’ views as compared to the mainstream media; rather because they objectively report on issues that relate to the Rakyat at large.

The problem with the UMNO led government is that they are still living in the 20th century ….. when we have already been in the 21st for coming to 11 years!

What was done in the past is irrelevant, not so much because people and things change …… rather things evolve over time.

It was therefore quite comical to hear about the launch of Rocky’s “www.mole.my” on Malaysia Day (16 Sept 20100) ….. that coincided with Najib’s so-called grand announcement of the repeal of the ISA.

The fact that Nazri has clarified that the new laws (replacing the ISA) would cover terrorism, race and religion ……. has poured tons of cold water on whatever little euphoria there was on the proposed repeal of the ISA!

Most of the detentions in the past under the ISA were perceived to be related to racial if not, religious issues!

So are the new laws just involving concocting a new cover for the same ISA laws?

Why is this being done ….. you may ask.

Because UMNO’s, MCA’s, MIC’s etc sheer existence are premised on Bangsa, Ugama ……. and of course Negara!

Convergence and assimilation are not in their vocabulary ….. in fact, it’s taboo!

And it is for that reason that many will expect the UMNO led government to play on the race and religious cards against the multi-racial opposition when it comes to the application of the securities laws!

The recent charges against Mat Sabu is a clear indication that nothing has changed …. only the rhetoric!

And who do they need to justify their actions ……. Rocky, of course, with the aid of the Fly Shit (literal Malay translation for ‘Tahi Lalat’, which in turn is the Malay dictionary translation for ‘Mole’).

I do wonder if the setting up of this ‘Fly Shit’ website has anything to do with Rocky’s new nick-name …..”The Twenty Six Million Dollar Man” …… with inflation factored in, of course!

Rocky’s justification for setting up Mole.my : So that readers will know that what is presented in “Mole.my” has been verified.

Based on several of its latest postings …… they were definitely NOT verified nor confirmed as factual.

In fact, they are UMNO’s online propaganda machine ….. a bit like a Trojan Horse.

So beware my friends of this FLY SHIT!

SUPERB COINING OF RAKYAT’S SENTIMENT IN VIDEO : OUR FUTURE IS IN OUR HANDS?

Couldn’t have said it better.

Question is whether our democratic rights will be compromised by the many, many unseen hands of the incumbents!

Notwithstanding the challenges and uncertainties, every eligible Malaysian should register and vote.

That should instil the fear of the Rakyat, if not the fear of God, into Malaysia’s politicians!!

IN PROVING ANWAR IBRAHIM IS OF QUESTIONABLE CHARACTER : WHY SO CARELESS?

This is becoming a silly comedy!

I recall even lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah declaring several years ago that they have clear evidence that Anwar Ibrahim is a sodomist.

Now, Anwar appears to be a bi-sexual!

In the Eskay Shazryl Abdullah vendetta, it started off in a room with an apparent prostitute.

Now, we are shown a clip of Anwar and Eskay apparently getting in or out of a lift in the hotel where the tryst occured.

Does that mean that if Anwar is filmed getting in or out of that hotel in question ……….. that other sex video confirms that the FAT BELLIED man is Anwar Ibrahim?

How stupid can these people be?

And to show their evil intentions, our dear old turn-coat, Rocky aka Ahirudin Attan turns this EXPOSE’ into front page fodder on his new mouldy web-blog, MOLE.

By highlighting this ‘lift’ incident shows that Rocky does not do any verification or corroboation …. as long it serves the objective of Rocky’s master ……NAJIB.

Click HERE for Rocky’s mouldy expose’!

ACQUITTED EX-SIME BANK CEO ISMAIL ZAKARIA : ‘SHINING CZAR’ THEN …. JUST LIKE AHMAD JAUHARI, RASHDAN YUSOF, KAMARUDDIN MERANUN …. SHINING CZARS NOW?

Not many may recall Ismail Zakaria.

One couldn’t even easily get his photo online until Malaysian Business Times published it recently.

Ismail Zakaria’s name then (up to the late 1990s) was so highly thought of that he was actually touted for the position of CEO of Maybank, which he eventually lost to Ahmad Don.

Ismail Zakaria (or IZ as he is known), joined Sime Bank as CEO after a short stint with RHB Bank.

But what we read about now is IZ’s acquittal from court charges of acting beyond his authority in lending up to RM175m to companies back in the late 1990s when CEO of Sime Bank, a subsidiary of Sime Darby Berhad.

Sime Bank was previously UMBC Bhd (United Malaysian Banking Corporation Bhd).

It’s amazing that such a matter would take over a decade to be dealt with ….. and even that, at the level of the Session’s Court!

But I do recall of the amazement at the way monies were expended by a bank supposedly controlled by a world renown company with fantastic governance and checks & balances – SIME DARBY BERHAD.

It is equally amazing (and galling) that in a relatively short period thereafter, we could witness the same scenario in Sime Darby’s Oil & Gas Division …… losing close to RM3.0 billion resulting from slip-shod management practices.

Actually, my point in this posting is that Malaysia’s corporate mentality still seems to be very much that if one appoints a high profile individual as CEO to a company ……. it is bound for success.

The actual track record of that person appears to be secondary.

As long as he/she has had their profile raised, CV’s polished, references ‘corroborated’ …… they appear acceptable, so to speak.

That seems to be the case for IZ then ……. and we seem to see it even to this day?

Look at the short-list for the Managing Director’s post for MAS as reported.

They were Ahmad Jauhari, Rashdan Yusof, Kamaruddin Meranun and Shazali Ramli.

Just what exactly has each and every one of them actually achieved?

Ahmad Jauhari was a member of the Sikap Power team that got the mandate to build an IPP plant in Port Dickson.

Naturally, it would be built and financed by others and resulted in the project being flipped first to MRCB and then to Malakoff.

Those who originally got the mandate would make a ‘killing’ from the flipping!

Ahmad Jauhari, then spent a time as MD of Malakoff, whose control (vide MMC)  by then had moved from the government to UMNO financier Syed Mokhtar Al Bukhari.

As for Rashdan Yusof ….. besides being with an audit firm and then the Thinking Company (Bina Fikir), Rashdan was also a director and shareholder of listed company, Megan Media Berhad, which collapsed so calamitously around the same time as Transmile Berhad.

And what about Kamaruddin Meranun?

Before he got his break, thanks to Snake Charmer, Tony Fernandez, what did Kamaruddin Meranun actually achieve?

He did spend some time with the Innosabah Securities Bhd Group, a stock broking firm in Sabah with subsidiaries involved in related activities eg. options and futures.

Innosabah collapsed under the same exposure that Sime Bank had then!

As for Shazali Ramli, well, he’s an apparently good marketing man especially known for his oily rolled back hair!!

Therefore, there seems to be a serious dearth of good quality CEOs for the Malaysian corporate community!

Or is it that the post of MD for MAS was earmarked for a pliant, financially secure individual who would do the bidding of the puppeteers behind the scene?

Just like Ismail Zakaria?

Ex-Sime Darby Berhad CEO, Zubir Mursid, who is facing his own court charges, must be quite positive with IZ’s acquittal.

Click HERE for BTimes report on IZ’s acquittal.

MALAYSIA’S SC IS BEING PORTRAYED AS A ‘STERILE CUCKOO’ : SHOULD THIS BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE?

Malaysia’s Securities Commission has, over the past year or so, been under ruthless attack from various social and corporate bloggers ….. triggered by (surprise, surprise) main-stream media reports, especially The Star newspaper.

Whilst the attacks had initially been rather personal i.e. against the chairman, Zarinah Anwar …… lately, the credibility of the organisation itself, the Securities Commission of Malaysia is being put into question.

Malaysia’s SC is one of the key institutions in Malaysia …… similar to that of Bank Negara Malaysia and the judiciary ……. and any apparent short-coming will never be tolerated …. be it from the locals or the foreigners, especially when it is prevalent.

The circumstances of the latest corporate transaction that caused the latest furore (Sime Darby’s acquisition of 30% of E&O) …… to the point of the SC being likened to ‘Solitude Commission’ and ‘Securities Comedy’ ….. has been unnecessarily damaging to the regulatory organisation.

Why unnecessary?

Because the circumstances could have been easily avoided.

How?

By not trading in the shares of those companies that one is a director of ……. especially if one was appointed as an independent director.

Especially so …… when one is married to a very senior official from a corporate regulatory organisation!

That way, even if one had been an independent director for the past 8 to 9 years, no issue can be raised against that director.

An added issue that has further damaged the regulatory organisation is the accumulation of negative perception arising from his other ‘transactions’ over the last few years.

This has enabled critics to put them together to unleash the latest lethal barrage against the SC and its chairman.

It is timely for an appropriate and professional response from the Commission,  something that the likes of the late Tun Ismail Ali or the late Choi Siew Hong ……. would have insisted on!

Nothing less!

Click HERE and HERE for the attacks against the SC.

UPDATE (13 Sept 2011) : And it get murkier HERE

LETTING TAJUDDIN RAMLI OFF THE HOOK : UMNO’S FEAR OF HIM SPILLING THE BEANS ABOUT THEIR ‘STRUCTURED COOPERATIVE’ PACT TO MILK THE COW?

Why was I not surprised that Tajuddin Ramli will ultimately be let off the hook for the many charges made against him by the likes of MAS, Telekom (Axiata) and Naluri?

Why will I not be surprised when ex Sime Darby CEO, Ahmad Zubir Murshid, will also be let off the hook from the many charges of improprieties?

I still recall the government selling a 32.9% stake in MAS to Tajuddin for RM1.79 billion in  1994 from Bank Negara Malaysia….. a significant sum during that time …… after which the airline went into a tail-spin.

The government’s response to the big hole caused by Tajuddin – buy back the stake for the same amount i.e. RM1.79 billion although its market value on the KLSE was only a proportion of that amount!

Let’s not forget that Tajuddin was given the 1st license to operate the cell-phone business under Celcom. It was a cash-cow for him …… and its value soared on subsequent listing.

Why did it plummet subsequently …… requiring rescue from Telekom Bhd …… which btw also sued him for improprieties?

Did Tajuddin (or Zubir for that matter) carry out those improprieties for their own personal benefit ……. OR were they the well known cronies for other parties?

Won’t this climb-down confirm the Rakyat’s suspicion of the sinister collaboration between politicians and corporate cronies?

One reason given for the ‘let-off’ ….. that reflected the government’s real fear ….. was that Tajuddin was counter-suing the plaintiffs.

Tajuddin was going to spill the beans!

I imagine Zubir (ex Sime Darby CEO) will be encouraged by this development.

Click HERE about attempts to placate the cronies.
