When this was told to me by a University student friend of mine……who had attended the Minister’s ‘meet the students’ session not so long ago…..I was absolutely flabbergasted!
In addition (and this is true), that Minister had a smirk on his face when he said so…….that he sends his children overseas for their education so that Malaysians could take up the local University places that would have otherwise been taken up by the Minister’s children.
This was his response to a student’s question as to why Ministers were sending their children overseas when the Government was singing praises about the Malaysian education system.
I believe that the students at the session were so taken aback by the Minister’s response….stunned to silence…..that the question of how his children’s education was to be financed was not asked!
I personally have heard of many of these senior (read: high net worth) individuals would somehow procure scholarships for their children to pursue these overseas educational courses.
Even if it was claimed that their children were personally financed by their family, one only needs to casually look into the projects that these ‘senior’ individuals have been able to procure from the Government, the benefits of which is so substantial…..that financing their children’s education would only be ‘a drop in the ocean’.
It’s the arrogance or the trend of it that is worrisome to the Rakyat……something similar to the ‘Keris Kissing’ incident that epitomised arrogance that has led to the ABU (Anything But UMNO) movement!
Arrogance to the extent that children of ‘senior’ individuals could declare themselves above the law.
Is it no wonder why the average Malaysian, irrespective of race, religion or ranking, deems it necessary to put these ‘senior’ individuals in check……..notwithstanding their ‘influential’ position in the country currently?
Former Philippine President, Gloria Arroyo Macapagal, is a clear example of how excesses committed during her reign of power……..can be made to account at an appropriate time later.
And how do we make it happen?
Vote wisely.
