Cycling first caught my attention when I read about the late Daud Ibrahim’s exploits in the 1970 Asian Games when he won gold.

His contemporaries then included Ng Joo Ngan, who is now a well known entrepreneur operating a chain of bicycle shops under the brand name of ‘Joo Ngan & Son’.

Later well known Malaysian cyclists were M. Kumaresan and Rosman Alwi, the latter having been trained by his equally dedicated coach and father, the late Alwi Ahmad.

All the above were good cyclists and made great sacrifices for the country.

But the current cycling toast of Malaysia has to be Azizul Hasni Awang …… whose exploits todate shows clearly that he is no flash in the pan.

His latest achievement is something out of a Hollywood movie where he crashes and has a splinter pierced through his calf ….. and yet he got up and finished his race ….. ending as the over-all World Cup winner for the keirin, ahead of the equally great Chris Hoy of Great Britain.

This is clearly an indication that all Malaysians are equal and if given the same encouragement and support, they would be world beaters in any endeavour that they undertake.

Well done, Azizul.
