Absolutely stumped!

That’s the only description I can give …. not so much at hearing the news about the death of the great snooker legend, Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins …. but the way he looked due to the ravages of throat cancer which he fought against for the last twelve years.

Somehow, I have always had an affinity for the talented but controversial and ‘disliked’ individuals. Besides Alex, there’s John McEnroe, Brian Clough (football manager) and the likes! I always feel that they are the least understood people!

But in Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins, you watch pure snooker talent. Pure genius. His only drawback as usual was his impatience and petulance.

Whilst he may have drawn many supporters and sympathisers from the crowd at large, amongst the fellow players, officials and organisers, he was considered the ultimate enemy!

At a personal level, it did not turn out well either ….. having been married twice, both of which ended in divorce and when he did depart, he departed alone in a flat let out to the under-privileged.

Reminds me of the words of a famous basketball coach:

Talent is God-given, be humble

Fame is man-given, be grateful

Conceit is self-given, be careful

Rest in peace, Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins.
