THAILAND: ‘STAND-OFF CLASSIC’ …. TIME FOR KING’S INTERVENTION?

Well, as the proverbial saying goes …. ‘do to others what you want others to do to you’.

I recall Anwar Ibrahim declaring that September 16 (2008) would be the date that the Pakatan Rakyat coalition would take over the government of Malaysia ….. with the cross-over of Barisan Nasional MPs.

Not only did it not happen (for political and stability reasons, so I was told), it boomerang-ed on Anwar Ibrahim in that his own coalition lost control of the state of Perak – via defections from his own party!!

This brings to mind what is currently happening up north in Thailand.

The previous elected Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, was unceremoniously removed first by the army …. and then his government was removed by the yellow shirted Bangkok elitists!

The rural and out-back activists are now taking a leaf out of what the ‘yellowists’ did then – the result of which Bangkok is again in a state of paralysis!

Stakes have gone up to the extent that 15 people have been killed, including 4 soldiers and one camerman (click HERE)

The problem for the government is that the soldiers and police are split in their support of the so-called ‘Royalist’ yellowists or the ‘Thaksin’ reddists!

This becomes more pronounced in that front-line personnel from the police and army are recruited from the lower rungs of society!

This fight is not about democracy! It’s about self interest ….. and Thaksin has the numbers to prevail in the democracy fight!

This reminds me of past incidents in Thailand that when disputes culminate in deaths ….. the much reverred King Bhumibol will intervene. This has happened in the case of ex-Prime Ministers, Thanom Kittikachorn and General Suchinda, both of whom had to resign and new elections were called.

The only problem now is that the King is somehow loath to have Thaksin back as the Prime Minister.

Some compromise is urgently needed in order to stem the threat of further blood shed!

Wisdom is known to always prevail as far as His Majesty King Bhumibol is concerned …. not sure about Thaksin and Abhisit though!
