PAS’ MAT SABU’S COMMUNIST : WHAT WILL UTUSAN THINK OF NEXT?
The question though is ……. is the Malay electorate so, so GULLIBLE as to believe these kind of wishy-washy accusations?

It was read with much incredulity that PAS’ recently elected Deputy President, Mat Sabu has been labelled a communist sympathizer!
And the accuser …… is none other than the UMNO mouth-organ, Utusan Malaysia.
And in so doing, it was very obvious that UMNO was trying its level best to gain back the Malay vote that has gone to PAS.
The question though is ……. is the Malay electorate so, so GULLIBLE as to believe these kind of wishy-washy accusations?
Not only that, the top echelons of UMNO have jumped on the band-wagon in sticking the knife into Mat Sabu …… the most prominent being DPM Muhyiddin Yassin!
Such is the desperation of UMNO’s struggle!
Btw, Mat Sabu has denied the accusations and plan to sue Utusan Malaysia for slander! Click HERE

SNOWBALLING CORRUPTION : FROM MALAYSIA TO INDIA …… AND YET ‘RESISTANT TO ACT’ MODE PREVAILS?

I have been monitoring development in India recently where the Congress led government had badly handled what was initially perceived to be an ‘attention seeker’ that has developed into nation-wide phenomenon against corruption.
The so-called ‘attention seeker’ is a man called Anna Hazare …… and his issue …… the rampant corruption in Indian society ….. that he is seeking stronger legislation against!
Sounds familiar, so what’s the issue?
Well, like in Malaysia ….. the people in India have got their conscience pricked on a subject that many in the past have accepted as a way of life!
Indians have now refused to accept that their difficult way of life is due to their past deeds or ‘karma’ as the Hindus (and Buddhists) call it!
Indians (like Malaysians) are now refusing to take it lying down, figuratively speaking.
Look, even the Libyans have had enough of the 42 year corrupt and idiosyncratic rule of Muammar Gaddafi and are prepared to lay down their lives in order to rid Libya of a despotic leader.
There seems to be a global awareness …. besides global warming …. to the global imbalances in the way the rich have been growing richer whilst the lower rungs are being taken for a ride.
Look at the Madoffs in the US and the Ramalinga Rajus in India.
In Malaysia, we have the Sime Darbys, Bank Bumiputeras, Sime Banks.
The key problem is that these shenanigans have got cosy relationships with the political powers at the top.
The politicians seem to have this inertia to act against corrupt practices that ultimately corrupt the countries that they lead.
It is no wonder that the people or Rakyat have decided to take their destinies into their own hands rather than rely on the current crop of politicians; be it in India, Malaysia, Libya and Syria!!
Malaysia’s Najib must be wondering how to get off the tiger without being eaten!

‘SALUTARY CONGRATULATIONS’ TO TEH HONG PIOW : FOR NOT ONLY SUSTAINING BUT EXPANDING A BANK OVER 45 YEARS …. WHILST OTHERS HAVE FALLEN BY WAY-SIDE?

There were many snide remarks against the recent party held for the head honcho of Public Bank, Tan Sri Teh Hong Piow!
By the way he was feted, he should be made a ‘Tun’ above all those current ‘Tuns’ who are perceived to have caused mayhem to the Malaysian society.
One of the critics was Khairy Jamaluddin who apparently tweeted that the event likened Tan Sri Teh to the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il.
Well, at least Tan Sri Teh accumulated his riches through a legitimate business that has grown leaps and bounds …… as compared to others who accumulated just as much riches (over a relatively shorter period) by leeching on to a politically powerful individual then ….. by marrying his daughter!
Hey, give the man a break.
Like many, he had to cultivate his network of associates and friends.
But unlike many, over a period of 45 years he has managed to sustain and expand a banking business that is so easy to abuse for one’s own selfish needs.
Look at Bank Bumiputera Malaysia ….. that had to be rescued so many times and finally gobbled up by CIMB.
What about its Hongkong arm, Bumiputera Malaysia Finance ….. which culminated in the murder of its internal auditor?
What about those ‘sweet heart’ deals of Tan Sri Rashid
Hussain of RHB Bank then?
And there was the disastrous loans made by Sime Bank when power appeared to have been literally given to CEO Ismail Zakaria on a silver platter by the Sime Darby board!
Should we now be surprised with the RM3.0 billion losses incurred by Sime Darby’s oil & gas arm when again the requisite checks and balances were not practiced?
For those that did not collapse, how many of them had to be re-capitalised in order to meet the capital adequacy requirements of Bank Negara Malaysia?
So, bud off mates.
Let the 81 year old gentlemen enjoy the praises of his staff who are well rewarded based on meritocracy.
TONY FERNANDES BUYS QPR : A ‘SYMBOLIC CAPTURE’ TO SIGNAL HIS LOSS OF CONTROL OF AIR ASIA?

The former head of scandal hit Satyam, Ramalinga Raju, was quoted, after his arrest for the shambolic farce relating to his company’s cooked up books including US$1.0 billion that was non-existent, as follows:
“IT’S LIKE RIDING ON A TIGER, NOT KNOWING HOW TO GET OFF WITHOUT BEING EATEN”.
It does make one wonder if Air Asia’s Tony Fernandes is facing the same predicament!
This entrepreneur, who took over an ailing airline from a croney Malaysian public listed company for only RM1.00 and then grabbed a huge portion of the Malaysian market previously monopolized by Malaysia Airlines ……. by running it more efficiently than the government airline, has now grown the airline by leaps and bounds.
He then made Air Asia’s financials look better than normal by applying purportedly acceptable practices like recognising profits before they have been earned!!
With such super figures, he listed Air Asia in the mid 2000 and is currently valued at RM10.5 billion!
Not bad for an initial investment of RM1.00!
This is when investors must take heed of the ominous signs that are currently taking place with respect to Air Asia.
He is on a roller coaster (of a tiger) ….. in an industry that is becoming impossibly competitive …. and is running out of good news!
This is when he indulges in promotional acts and statements to prop up the share price of Air Asia.
An example is a few days after having announced the acquisition of 200 planes, he makes another announcement of his intention to acquire another 100 planes!
Don’t these costly acquisitions require detailed study ….. unless it is just for show?
Of course, my critics will retort that I’m just being a sour puss …… how can a single man singularly raise Air Asia’s share price from 80 sen to RM3.95!
Ah, this is where the recently announced ‘collaboration’ between the government owned Malaysia Airlines and Tony’s Air Asia comes into play.
MAS is as good as a goner due to it being a political entity where besides having been a cash cow for UMNO cronies in the past (read: Tajuddin Ramli), laying off its largely dead woods amongst its 20,000 employees ….. is politically non-acceptable.
Therefore, whatever that needs to be done has to be done subtly and it will be in the form of Air Asia.
This leads me to the conclusion that Air Asia is not singularly controlled by Tony Fernandes nor Tune Air!
Why?
Air Asia’s phenomenal rise in share price is due to the accumulation and support of its shares by government agencies like EPF, Value Cap and Tabung Haji as reported in the press.
This is indeed an exit exercise for Tony Fernandes …… in order for him to indulge in other vices ….. like buying a football club like Queens Park Rangers!!
REFORMS FOR MALAYSIA VIA ‘SELECT COMMITTEES’ : FOR REAL OR FOR SHOW?

It was reported recently that the UMNO led government appears to have conceded to the demands of the Rakyat.
One was the appointment of a Select Committee to reform the election rules and law that was demanded by the opposition supported NGO initiated BERSIH group.
Of course, the other involves the review of the media rules as current law is archaic in response to our advanced information, communication and technology era.
Why am I not convinced about the sincerity of the UMNO led government to see through the reforms of the election laws?
Well to start off with, any real reform would spell the demise of UMNO.
One example would be proportional representation in Parliament.
The recent Sarawak state elections epitomized the basic flaws.
A seat that comprises predominantly Malays/Melanaus who support the Chief Minister, Taib Mahmud, would contain about 6,000 to 8,000 voters per seat.
However, for Chinese areas that support the opposition, one seat would contain 25,000 to 30,000 voters!
This practice is also endemic in Peninsular Malaysia.
Of course, the challenge now for UMNO is that the heart and mind of the Malays have an alternative representative in the form of PAS.
And with the endemic corruption and greed of the UMNO hard-core, the viability of UMNO as a reliable governing entity is in serious doubt, hence making their UMNO safe seats ….. well, not so safe.
So to expect UMNO to dig a grave for themselves would be foolhardy.
They will put the select committees through the works.
How?
The secretariats for all these committees are controlled by ‘Little Napoleons’ who do UMNO’s bidding.
So whatever good work or recommendations put by the committee’s members will never be recorded if they are against UMNO’s interests ……. or it will not be drafted in the way it was intended.
This is a standard practice of the civil service whereby high profile individuals are invited to join these committees, tribunals or Commission of Inquiry after which the already decided outcome is drafted and rubber stamped by these bodies.
Any vehement objections by members will be taken not too kindly with accusations of self interest, non-team player or threat of ostracisation.
A clear example is the recommendations of the National Economic Advisory Council which never saw the light of day!
Click HERE and HERE for the early signs of cracks.
So keep the jury out for this ‘Select Committee’ for reform hoo-ha which may end up as a scrap of heap labelled as a ‘Silly Con’!

Lee Chong Wei’s mental strength was thought to have improved tremendously since winning his second All England singles title earlier this year.
But it does NOT appear to be so when he faces Lin Dan of China!
For the umpteenth time, Chong Wei’s concentration was easily broken …… by Lin Dan politely refusing to change the shuttle, when they were tied at 10-10 during the second set.
To be fair, the umpire concurred with Lin Dan’s decision after inspecting the shuttle.
After that, Lin Dan easily increased his lead to 17 – 10, after which Chong Wei never really recovered resulting in him losing the match 22-20, 14-21 and 21-23.
Just maybe, Misbun should be back as his coach!

Why was I not surprised that Tajuddin Ramli will ultimately be let off the hook for the many charges made against him by the likes of MAS, Telekom (Axiata) and Naluri?
Why will I not be surprised when ex Sime Darby CEO, Ahmad Zubir Murshid, will also be let off the hook from the many charges of improprieties?
I still recall the government selling a 32.9% stake in MAS to Tajuddin for RM1.79 billion in 1994 from Bank Negara Malaysia….. a significant sum during that time …… after which the airline went into a tail-spin.
The government’s response to the big hole caused by Tajuddin – buy back the stake for the same amount i.e. RM1.79 billion although its market value on the KLSE was only a proportion of that amount!
Let’s not forget that Tajuddin was given the 1st license to operate the cell-phone business under Celcom. It was a cash-cow for him …… and its value soared on subsequent listing.
Why did it plummet subsequently …… requiring rescue from Telekom Bhd …… which btw also sued him for improprieties?
Did Tajuddin (or Zubir for that matter) carry out those improprieties for their own personal benefit ……. OR were they the well known cronies for other parties?
Won’t this climb-down confirm the Rakyat’s suspicion of the sinister collaboration between politicians and corporate cronies?
One reason given for the ‘let-off’ ….. that reflected the government’s real fear ….. was that Tajuddin was counter-suing the plaintiffs.
Tajuddin was going to spill the beans!
I imagine Zubir (ex Sime Darby CEO) will be encouraged by this development.

Many supporters of colonialism have justified it by pointing to the development England has brought to their colonies e.g. Australia, Singapore and Malaysia.
The key area always touted was that of the ‘Rule of Law’ ….. which incidentally is one of Malaysia’s Rukunegara pledges!
And it was under England’s ‘Rule of Law’ that enabled all its Commonwealth subjects at that time to have the same ‘abode’ rights as that of its citizens in the British Isles.
That resulted in the massive influx of ‘Commonwealth’ immigrants into Britain from the likes of West Indies, India, Pakistan and Hongkong to name a few.
Unfortunately, the racist attitude and policies of the British administration resulted in many slums areas in many parts of Britain that were occupied by these immigrants ….. from down south in London to the Midlands.
Of course this would be officially denied by the English denominated government and claims that many government workers including the police are from the minorities.
On the ground, we all know otherwise …… this glass ceiling for minorities and superiority complex of the white guys …… laid the seeds for the kind of violence that we recently saw in London and other cities ……. which incidentally also occurred in 1981 when I was in that country!
In the Malaysian context, lessons can be learnt from the English experience (it’s so unfair to say ‘British’ and drag in the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish for the follies of the English) in that the attempt to impose a SUPERIOR RACE over the other races is bound for failure.
The fact that Britain had those riots were the outlet of deep frustration that had been accumulating over many years ……. arising from the racist and slanted policies of the English slanted government!
Again, in the Malaysian context, it is more serious in that the UMNO led government is not only waging a RACIST tirade against the other minorities, it is also perpetuating the ‘massive leakages’ (read: corruption) that even disadvantage its own Malay race.
This has resulted in serious issues for the Malaysian man on the street …… in cost of living terms ….. whilst the ‘elites’ can afford items like a RM24m diamond ring!
It is therefore rather shallow for Malaysia’s Deputy Inspector General of Police to recently liken the London riots to the BERSIH rally ……. hence justifying the Malaysian Police response! Click HERE
The London riots was triggered by the death of one man …… allegedly killed by the police.
In the BERSIH rally, one man also died ….. allegedly from the action (or inaction) of the police.
But did a riot occur after the death of the Malaysian man?
Don’t insult the many decent and brave Malaysians who were just demanding for reforms to ensure CLEAN AND FAIR ELECTIONS!
AIR ASIA TO TAKE A 20% SHARE IN MALAYSIA AIRLINES : A ‘SHARE CONSPIRACY’ HATCHED UP IN MID-AIR??

Aptly named “The Malaysian Insider” has released breaking news that a restructuring for Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is in the works …….. that will also feature (surprise, surprise) Snake in Suit, Air Asia’s Tony Fernandez!
Recently, Malaysia Airlines appointed Tan Sri Md Nor Yusof as chairman in place of Tan Sri Munir Majid.
Tan Sri Md Nor was the Managing Director of MAS when it embarked on its “WAU” i.e. Widespread Asset Unbundling exercise in 2002 which essentially saw the Malaysian government bailing out the company by taking over MAS’ liabilities (and the planes).
The planes were then leased back to MAS.
Essentially this helped prevent MAS from ‘going under’ due its heavy repayment obligations.
If you can recall, the “WAU” was the brainchild of a boutique adviser called BINA FIKIR, whose main owner, Azman Mokhtar, is now the Managing Director of Khazanah, the investment arm of the Malaysian government.
So why is MAS requiring to be rescued again in less than 10 years after being bailed out by the government?
With the government company, Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad, taking over the financial burden of MAS, should MAS be requiring another rescue notwithstanding the competition from the likes of other airlines and Air Asia?
Singapore Airlines is still profitable inspite of the global competition for passenger traffic.
MAS, like Singapore Airlines, has got a good brand …….. has been winning awards every year ….. had a ‘great’ MD in Idris Jala who is now Malaysia’s Minister in charge of its Performance Management & Delivery Unit ……. so why is it still in the doldrums?
One basic problem is that when individuals are put to helm these companies, the limitations placed on them are so enormous that it would have been IMPOSSIBLE to get those companies out of the quagmire! Click HERE for an elaboration.
Idris Jala was smart enough to jump ship after (I was told) painting a rather rosy picture of a company that he is leaving behind!
Maybe Idris Jala can reply to the many questions from this deal as asked by the MP from Wangsa Maju. Click HERE
And when these companies implode, the powers to be quickly carry out stop-gap measures …… not so much to address the fundamental issues ……. but to hide the obvious embarrassing issues that caused its demise in the first place.
In MAS’ case, Tony Fernandez appears to have been ‘directed’ to do the necessary by covering up the ‘shame’!
After all, his company’s shares have been supported strongly by the government agencies e.g. EPF that from a meek price of about 70 sen, Air Asia’s share price is now touching RM4.00.
On another note, MAS’ predicament also appears to be due to the tight-fisted position of the Malaysian government ….. resulting in Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad being unable to continue supporting MAS.
This may explain why MAS’ latest accounts surprisingly show planes worth RM6.0 billion in its books and financed by borrowings.
Under the WAU arrangement, the planes are to be in the books of Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad, not MAS!
Is Tan Sri Md Nor Yusof’s appointment actually to protect the banks’ loans (presumably including CIMB) to MAS?
It surely doesn’t make good reading for the financial position of Malaysia’s government coffers ….. especially when the United States of America’s financial standing has just been down-graded from AAA to AA+ by a rating agency.
