Many of you would have read about the tragic death of DAP political aide, Teoh Beng Hock.
The rumour mill will go into over-drive and the story will vary tremendously depending on which side of the political divide that one is on.
However, we all know that the political temperature has always been at a constant high since 8 March 2008 and his tragic death at the hands of the Malaysian Anti Corruption Agency, who are perceived to be the errand boys of the powers to be, will only add to the animosity and disgruntlement of the Rakyat.
It is imperative that the circumstances culminating in his death is quickly and transparently addressed and its report made public.
Najib has to direct that this sad incident be managed in the most humane manner.
Update on 22 July 2009: As expected, the views are wide and varied. A must see is Raja Petra’s take vide a video. Click here.
Another is the UMNO, er I mean the Berita Harian view. Click here.
Only means that an independent investigation into the circumstances leading to death is a pre-requisite. Trying to “manage” the situation, like during the Mathathirism years, will more often than not lead to a major SCrew up!
Update on 23 July 2009: Well, the Royal Commission is there but it is to review the interrogation procedures of MACC. As for the cause of Teoh Beng Hock’s death, it will be “enquired into” by a junior court official called a magistrate (Click here).
Sceptics have immediately cried foul accusing the government of avoiding a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to look into the cause of Teoh’s death because these high powered individuals in the RCI may be able to ascertain the real cause of the death as COMPARED to a junior court official in an Inquest that is going to rely very much on the (perceived to be conflicted) police investigations.
This whole chicanery has led one blog to describe MACC as “Murderers And Cowards Commission” (Click here) ….. and ably supported by the powers that be!
Looks like the last line of RPK’s video has been confirmed : “They are truly SCrewed!”
By the way, Australia is proposing additional anti-terrorism laws by making it an offence to incite violence against someone based on race, religion or nationality (Click here). If Malaysia has not already done so (I can’t tell because so many of our laws are not enforced!), we should quickly put it into effect and warn those on both sides of the political divide not to go over-board with the rhetoric …. or as one newspaper puts it, “jangan terlampau”.
